A ritual for asian fine hair

When I first bleached my naturally black hair and dyed it a deep, dreamy purple, I knew I was signing up for more than just a color change. Asian hair — especially when it’s fine — can be delicate, and bleach doesn’t exactly play nice. I think the hair dresser said she had to bleach it a level 9 out of 11? Unsure, but it sounded like a lot at the moment, and I knew I needed a good colored hair care routine. But I was determined to keep my strands soft, vibrant, and healthy. And I did. Compliments kept coming, even months after the color settled in. The secret? A ritual that felt more like self-care than maintenance.
Here’s how I cared for my colored hair — not just to preserve the purple, but to protect the integrity of my fine strands.
Pre-Wash: Nourish Before You Cleanse
Before stepping into the shower, I always made sure to dampen my hair — just enough to help it soak up the goodness — and then layered on a nourishing hair mask. I’d let it sit for at least 30 minutes while I eased into my evening. This wasn’t optional. I’d seen how brittle and dry bleached hair could look on others, and I was determined to protect mine. Hydration was key, and this pre-shower ritual became my way of giving my strands a head start.
My favorite masks
This one you may have seen it all over social media and it is viral for a reason … not only is it cheap but it also leaves your hair feeling soft and silky. This has been a gift of mine to multiple friends and I have never heard any complaints

Browsing through Amazon and looking at reviews also gives you plenty of good options and that is how I stumbled upon these two – rich and refreshing, and most importantely, also cheap.

And finally, as someone who actually loves grocery shopping, I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to look at every single hair product my local Safeway had to offer. I had already been using Shampoo and Conditioners from this brand so I though I might as well try their hair masks.

During Wash: Gentle Cleansing, Color Protection
Once I step into the shower, I start with a double-shampoo method that changed everything for my bleached, purple-toned hair. First, I use a shampoo exclusively for my scalp. I try to wash 2 to 3 times, making sure to massage my scalp thoroughly at the front, sides and back. I have found that any shampoo is good for this. Sometimes though, I do need some extra cleansing power and for that, I use the a scalp-focused cleanser like the OUAI Detox Shampoo to gently remove buildup and refresh my roots. It’s invigorating and doesn’t strip my scalp — a must when you’re dealing with fine, color-treated strands.

Then, instead of dragging that shampoo through the rest of my hair, I switch to a color-safe formula for the lengths and ends. I love the Yper Comb + PURPLE – WATERCOLORS — it’s gentle, hydrating, and helps preserve the richness of my purple hue. This two-shampoo approach keeps my scalp clean without over-cleansing the fragile, bleached parts of my hair.

After rinsing, I pour a little A’PIEU Raspberry Hair Vinegar through my strands. It balances my scalp’s pH, adds shine, and helps seal the cuticle — a must for color longevity. I let it sit while I finish the rest of my shower, then rinse it out last.
Sometimes, I’ll use my scalp massager — either during the shampoo or before bed. The key? Don’t drag it. Just press gently and move in slow circles. It’s soothing and stimulates circulation without irritating the scalp.

Post-Wash: Lock in Moisture, Protect the Color
After towel drying, I’d apply a leave-in conditioner to keep my strands soft and manageable. Then came the heat protectant — essential for blow-drying. If I did not use leave-in conditioner, I’d follow with 1–2 drops of hair oil after the heat protectant, warming it between my palms and smoothing it through the ends. This combo helped seal in hydration and added a silky finish without weighing down my fine hair.
I always blow-dried to at least 80%, focusing first on my scalp.

Between Washes: Refresh Without Residue
On non-wash days, I relied on this Living Proof dry shampoo. It’s lightweight, invisible, and perfect for fine hair. I’d spray it close to the roots before bed and let it absorb overnight. By morning, my hair felt fresh and voluminous — no chalky residue, no stiffness.
Sometimes, I’d revisit the scalp massager before sleep. Just a few minutes of gentle circles helped me unwind and gave my scalp a little love.

Coloring your hair — especially bleaching it — doesn’t have to mean sacrificing softness or shine. With the right hair care ritual, even fine Asian hair can stay vibrant, healthy, and full of life. This routine helped me hold onto my purple glow longer than I expected, and it reminded me that care is a form of celebration. One year later and I still received compliments, people would say “did you color it again?” and nope, I never did, it was the shampoo!
If you’re thinking of coloring your hair or already rocking a bold shade, I hope this inspires you to build a ritual that feels nourishing, not just necessary. Your hair deserves it — and so do you.
